Community is at the heart of our practice. We are involved in at least one community event or pro bono project each month, primarily focused on human rights, education, women, or veterans. Most recently, we announced the launch of our pop-up café series — OG Garden Café. Our café series amplifies socially responsible brands to bring high caliber art and entertainment to our community. We featured a beauty bar in our cafe at Planet 13 Orange County during a Farmer’s Market. The event was a neighborhood sample sale and immersive experience of quality products. During the final interview, the CEO disclosed the company’s industry — cannabis. After hearing that I was totally confused — is cannabis legal? After giving it more thought, I went home and began researching California laws on cannabis and realized that there were limited laws governing the industry. My mind changed from confusion to intrigue.

Rarely do lawyers shape the law while they practice it. I saw the challenge as my golden ticket to make history in a niche area of the law, so I took it!

Last week, for example, as we were headed to the Senate Appropriations Committee markup of the foreign aid bill, we ran into former Secretary of State and leader of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Colin Powell.  The true Washington DC fashion, we introduced ourselves as ANCA interns and chatted briefly.  That encounter was captured on film by a photographer for Roll Call, a Capitol Hill newspaper, and promptly posted online (with appropriate ANCA caption.)
